Streets of Rage 2 is widely celebrated as the pinnacle of 16-bit beat ’em ups, fueled by Yuzo Koshiro’s unforgettable club-music soundtrack.
Genesis / Mega Drive game, distinct from Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 3.
Players: Two-player mode is simultaneous co-op; Duel is a separate competitive mode. Allies can damage each other. For a second player, configure Player 2 in the player’s control settings or connect a second gamepad.
Language: The exact language and revision of this browser copy have not been independently confirmed. Check the title screen before following a regional guide.
On a phone: A controller is recommended for two-player games. Physical Android and iPhone compatibility has not been verified.
Take Axel, Blaze, Max Thunder, or Skate through neon city streets, amusement parks, and Mr. X’s island stronghold. Each brawler possesses individual mobility, throw damage, and devastating forward-special attacks.
Axel’s Grand Upper (Forward, Forward + Punch) deals monumental multi-hit damage and has invincibility frames during start-up. Use it to cleanly knock through crowd ambushes.
This is the definitive Sega Genesis release with full 2-player co-op and Yuzo Koshiro / Motohiro Kawashima FM-synth audio.

Choose 1 PLAYER for a solo run, 2 PLAYERS for co-op, or DUEL for competition. In co-op, choose different fighters. Options let you change difficulty and the number of starting fighters.
For your first attempt, keep the settings consistent and practise one short opening encounter. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether a different approach helped.

| Genesis pad | Action |
|---|---|
| A | Special attack. |
| B | Attack; pick up items and weapons. |
| C | Jump. |
| Start | Start or pause. |
These are controller labels, not keyboard letters. Check the player’s control settings for their keyboard or gamepad assignments.
Before collecting a weapon, test movement and jumping in a clear space. Keep the character you chose while learning; swapping fighters every retry makes your practice harder to compare.

Co-op partners can damage each other. Player 2 can join an ongoing run through the second controller’s Start input.
Set up Player 2 separately before a serious attempt. Assign each partner a side of the fight and avoid swinging through the same space. When you lose health, identify whether it came from an enemy or your partner before changing your approach.
