The King of Fighters 2002 delivers lightning-fast competitive 3v3 action, celebrated for its MAX Mode cancel engine and polished dream match balance.
Returning to the beloved 3-on-3 elimination format without the controversial Striker mechanic, KOF 2002 centers entirely on fundamental spacing, short hops, and command normal links. The centerpiece of tournament play is the MAX Mode activation (B + C): spending one stock of power gauge triggers a temporary state where special moves can be cancelled into other specials, culminating in devastating MAX2 hidden super despatches (HSDM) available when your health drops below one-quarter.
Mastering the short hop (a light tap on the upward diagonal) is mandatory for pressuring crouching defenders with high-priority overhead normals like Iori’s cross-up Yuri Ori. In MAX Mode, practice basic BC cancel strings into bread-and-butter super moves: canceling a heavy punch directly into MAX activation lets you bypass standard startup recovery and launch uninterrupted combo damage.
This is the original Neo Geo MVS arcade dream match. Alongside The King of Fighters 98, it represents the definitive competitive benchmark of SNK’s 2D team-based fighting engines.
